Erase selected files, drives, and local traces before retiring or sharing storage.
## Plan sensitive-data removal with O&O SafeErase 21
O&O SafeErase 21 provides deletion workflows for selected files, folders, drives, and an entire computer. It also covers local browser traces and temporary program data.
Choose the scope around the data you intend to remove. Erasure is intended to prevent recovery, so verify the target and preserve any information you still need before confirming an operation.
## Distinguish erasure from ordinary deletion
Deleting an item in Windows does not necessarily remove its stored contents immediately. SafeErase provides dedicated deletion methods rather than relying only on moving a file to the Recycle Bin.
Review whether you want to remove selected items or retire a complete drive. A narrowly selected file task and a whole-computer operation have very different consequences.
## Review the storage type and deletion method
Version 21 introduces a redesigned deletion engine with SSD and NVMe support. The 21-series updates add SolidErase for SSD-oriented handling.
Confirm the detected media type and the method offered by your installed build. Repeated overwrite passes are not a universal measure of effectiveness on every storage device; assess the actual scope and hardware involved.
## Inspect browser and temporary-data selections
Browser cleanup covers supported browsers, with selectable local history and related data. Review the categories before applying deletion.
Removing local traces does not delete copies held by websites, other devices, or backups. Check whether you need saved information before clearing it, and do not treat cleanup as a guarantee of online anonymity.
## Prepare isolated erasure when required
Fortress Mode runs the application in a separate Windows environment for tasks affected by running applications or locked data. TotalErase provides a whole-computer deletion workflow.
Check the selected edition and available controls before planning a task. Save work, keep needed recovery copies independently, and verify the intended disks before leaving the normal Windows environment.
## Review schedules and deletion reports
Scheduling supports recurring tasks, and reports record deletion activity. Use them to check what ran and which targets were processed.
Review warnings and incomplete results rather than treating the existence of a report as proof that every possible copy is gone. Keep documentation outside any storage you plan to erase completely.
## Keep backup and recovery separate from erasure
For preserving data before retiring a computer, see [O&O DiskImage 23](https://find-your-software.com/oo-software/diskimage-23/) . [O&O DiskRecovery 14](https://find-your-software.com/oo-software/diskrecovery-14/) describes searching for surviving deleted files, which is a different task.
Do not test recovery or deletion against your only copy of important information. Review license coverage and the exact task before proceeding; no page description substitutes for checking the selected target.
## O&O SafeErase 21 FAQ
Answers to common questions
### What is O&O SafeErase 21 used for?
It provides dedicated deletion workflows for files, folders, drives, local traces, and whole-computer retirement.
### How is erasure different from emptying the Recycle Bin?
Ordinary deletion may leave stored data available for recovery. Dedicated erasure applies a selected deletion method to the chosen targets.
### Does it provide SSD-specific handling?
Version 21 supports SSD and NVMe storage, with SolidErase added in 21-series updates. Review the installed build, detected device type, and offered method.
### Does browser cleanup remove every online copy?
No. Local cleanup does not remove website records, other devices, or independent backups. Inspect the selected categories before deletion.
### What is Fortress Mode?
It runs SafeErase in a separate Windows environment for applicable erasure tasks. Check the edition and prepare required data copies before using it.
### Can a deletion report guarantee every copy is gone?
No. Review the processed targets, warnings, and completion status. Copies outside the selected scope require separate consideration.
### What should I do before whole-computer erasure?
Preserve and verify needed data elsewhere, save required recovery information, and confirm the intended disks. The operation is meant to prevent later recovery.
