# Cloud Backup: What to Check Before You Choose

Evaluate cloud backup by version history, recovery workflow, encryption, account access and the time needed to restore your data.

Practical guide

Cloud backup adds a copy away from your computer. Judge it by the recovery process: which files are covered, how long versions remain available and how you would download data after losing the original device.

## Backup, synchronization and storage

| Service behavior | Useful for | Check before relying on it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Synchronization | Working with files across devices | Whether deletions propagate and how versions are retained |
| Cloud backup | Recovering selected data from previous dates | Coverage, retention and restore process |
| Online storage | Keeping uploaded files elsewhere | Whether new and changed files are copied automatically |

## Compare recovery features

- Check which local folders, external disks and cloud-only files are included.
- Read the retention rules for older versions and deleted files.
- Find out how to restore after replacing the computer, including access to encryption keys.
- Consider upload and download bandwidth; test a representative restore rather than assuming instant recovery.
- Check account recovery and multi-factor authentication before the original device becomes unavailable.

## Set up and test

1. Select important folders and confirm any exclusions.
2. Run the initial backup and review errors or skipped files.
3. Enable a suitable schedule and notifications.
4. Restore a sample to a different folder and open the files.
5. Keep an independent local copy for recovery when the internet or account is unavailable.

## Where built-in tools fit

Windows Backup uses your Microsoft account for its supported folder and settings workflow. Apple documents Time Machine for Mac backups. Neither name alone tells you whether a separate cloud service covers all of your data; read the exact coverage and restore instructions.
