Remove sensitive data from selected local storage
Laplink SafeErase is a Windows data-erasure utility for files, folders, partitions and drives. Choose a deletion task for material you intend to remove permanently, or prepare local storage before passing a computer to someone else.
First identify what must be kept and what belongs in the deletion scope. Preserve needed documents and settings on an independent destination before starting an operation intended to make the selected data unavailable.
Choose between files, free space and whole-drive erasure
File and folder deletion targets selected items. Free-space cleaning addresses areas marked as unused, while partition, disk and entire-computer operations have a much broader scope. These modes should be chosen according to what you want to remove.
Check the selected path or drive identity before confirming. Clearing free space is different from erasing the active contents of a drive, and a whole-computer operation can also remove Windows, applications and settings.
Review temporary and browser-data categories
SafeErase includes tasks for temporary Windows and application files, browser data and the Recycle Bin. Deletion profiles and saved lists help organize repeated selections.
Review the categories and paths each time you reuse a list, especially after changing applications or moving folders. Local browser cleanup does not erase records held by a website, and a saved selection may need revision as your working environment changes.
Select the method for the actual storage device
The application provides a choice of deletion methods. Use the supported workflow for the storage type and installed release rather than assuming that one setting is appropriate for every device.
For an SSD, check the version-specific deletion guidance and available controls before applying a method. Avoid treating a higher overwrite-pass count as proof of complete coverage on every kind of storage. The drive, the operation and its actual target all matter.
Keep reports and check the operation result
Reports document deletion operations, while saved deletion lists make recurring tasks easier to set up. Review completion information and any errors instead of treating the start of a task as confirmation that everything selected was processed.
A report describes the operation and its scope. It does not establish that separate copies in backup archives, cloud accounts or other devices have also been deleted. Check those locations independently when they are part of your intended data-removal plan.
Preserve what you need before handing over a computer
Finish any transfer or backup of important files before using a whole-drive or entire-computer task. Confirm that the retained copy opens from its separate destination, and plan how the computer will be prepared for its next user.
