Product comparison

Laplink SafeErase vs CCleaner Professional

This comparison separates deliberate data erasure from routine Windows maintenance. Both products address local data, but removing unnecessary files or browser traces does not establish that a drive has been sanitized.

Version and storage scope

The Laplink catalog entry and current product overview do not specify a release number. Confirm the installed build and its supported methods, especially for SSDs, before attributing a feature from another SafeErase product or a different generation.

A selected-file task, free-space cleaning and whole-drive erasure cover different targets. Local erasure does not automatically remove independent copies in backups, cloud accounts or other devices. Reports describe the attempted operation and its results, not every possible copy of the data.

Routine cleanup or deliberate removal of stored data?

Consider CCleaner Professional for reviewing unnecessary files, browser data and maintenance tasks. Inspect its selected categories before cleaning so that useful cookies and application data are retained.

Consider Laplink SafeErase when the intended result is removal of selected data or preparation of storage for handover. Match the explicit erasure scope and method to the installed release and target device.

Drive Wiper appears in older CCleaner feature descriptions and the general product policy, but was not available in the initial CCleaner 7 release. Check the current installed build before planning any drive-erasure task around that name.

CCleaner's vendor guidance advises against its secure-overwrite tools on SSDs. A maintenance tool detecting an SSD does not by itself establish that every overwrite operation is appropriate for it.

Check the function behind the product label

  1. Decide whether the goal is freeing space, removing selected traces or retiring a storage device.
  2. Inspect the installed version and confirm that the required function actually exists.
  3. Review selected paths, data categories and any device-specific guidance using disposable test material.
  4. Check completion information and keep needed files separately before a permanent-erasure operation.

This comparison describes documented functions and their scope. We have not benchmarked erasure speed or independently verified sanitization coverage. Treat erasure as permanent and preserve anything needed on an independent destination before confirming the operation.
